Issues with Adafruit Metro 328 Starter Pack

Post by jamis82 »

Hey folks,

I ordered the "Adafruit Metro 328 Starter Pack" and am working through the tutorials linked from the product page.

I'm completely new to electronics & hardware

I've run into 2 issues:
1. The blinking LED tutorial shows the half breadboard, and the kit comes with the tiny breadboard. Is there a tutorial anywhere that shows how to wire the LED up with the tiny breadboard or do the same without the power rails?
2. I can get the on-board LED blinking as I want when powering via usb. When I plug the led directly into 13 and grnd it also works via usb. When I use the DC plug the on-board LED starts flashing with the pattern, but then all the lights fade out. Then come back. Repeat. The same happens with the "On" light on the board.

Can I assume that this means a faulty plug or connection with the DC cable?

Post a photo showing your hardware and connections and we'll take a look. 800x600 images usually work best.

First two are part of burst mode. You can see that all the lights go off after a split second.

When I use the usb to power instead there are no such issues.

Is there another DC plug I could swap this out for to try it? I want to ensure I have the right voltage so I don’t fry anything.

What are the output voltage/current specs for your wall adapter?

Is there anything special about this one or could I try another 9V one I have around the house?

Go ahead and try another if you have one. I just wanted to make sure the one shown would deliver enough voltage to keep the Metro's onboard voltage regulator happy.

As a sanity check, what voltage do you see between the Metro's VIN and GND pins when that supply is connected?
