Diffused Slow Fade Flashing RGB LED not suitable for audio applications

Post by bbrucato »

These LEDs: Diffused 5mm Slow Fade Flashing RGB LED https://www.adafruit.com/product/679

Super cool idea and they look amazing. Unfortunately, using them for an indicator light on a guitar pedal revealed that they both add noise/interference, but also the pitch of the noise changes as the color fades/changes. The first part might be tolerable, but the second is not.

I suspect there's a controller that's PWMing the 3 individual LEDs. That's going to be noisy. The different colors behave slightly differently electrically so the noise depending on color isn't surprising. Have you tried a small capacitor across the power & ground leads?
