STOP THE MADNESS: How to use the drill guide

Post by darco »

Alright, I've seen too many ybox2 tins made *backward*, and it's driving me *crazy*.

You know the drill guide? Yeah, this one. It's designed to be cut out, and then taped to the *bottom* of the tin. You then drill right thru it. Just like in these pics:

And then, when you are done, it looks like this:

Doesn't that look better? You can see all of the pictures here.

I hope this helps save a few mangled tins.

The pictures alone were good enough to get an idea how to drill out the tin. The only thing you need to do is go slow when drilling them and to make sure the guid is on properly and tight. I went through 2 tins. I got a little over eagear and tore one up and I did not like the way the other came out.

something is amiss. Either the tins have gotten smaller, the ethernet ports have gotten bigger or I am missing something. The plug I have is too big not to cut the lid. I don't have a problem with that, but it doesn't look like the one in the picture it was necessary. Am I missing something? I have lots of tins to play with, so I am not worried about messing a few up, but I would like to understand the disconnect.

thanks.

If the bottom of the tin doesn't match up exactly with the outline on the guide, then it is likely being scaled inappropriately when you are printing it.

Make sure that "fit to page" is turned off when you try to print the drill guide.

not so much the drill guide, but the actual size of the ethernet port.

Oh! Sorry, I misunderstood.

I have always had the same issue you described. It is easily solved by bending the lip of the lid out slightly with your thumb. It will then fit quite nicely. That's what I did in the photos.

You can see me doing this in the following three photos:

But why do both ThinkGeek AND LadyAda have incorrect pics on their pages?

Because they didn't want to make a new tin just to take a few pictures.

I don't blame them.

Yeah, but how hard is it to take one of the correct pictures floating around and swap them? (Having an incorrect picture on the pages where most people order the kits MAY be why there are so many backwards YBoxen out there.)

Just a thought.

I was getting "server not found" errors on this. Contacted darco about it and he pointed me to the drill guide on github.

LadaAda's instructions also refer to the broken link.
